# Windows 11 Home vs Pro: the seven differences that matter

> A feature-by-feature comparison of Windows 11 Home and Pro — BitLocker, Remote Desktop host, Hyper-V, domain join, Group Policy, RAM ceiling — and when the upgrade is wasted money.

**Tested on**

- Build: 26300.9457
- Edition: Home / Pro (26H2)
- Architecture: x64
- Evidence: E1
- Verified: 2026-10-29

## The short answer

Most people do not need Pro. The upgrade buys **management and hosting**, not speed, not security patches, and not features you will notice on a single-user desktop.

Seven differences actually change what you can do:

| Capability | Home | Pro | Who cares |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Remote Desktop *host*** | client only | ✅ host | you connect *to* this PC |
| **Hyper-V** | ✗ | ✅ | VMs without VirtualBox/VMware |
| **Domain join / Entra join** | limited | ✅ | work or school-managed PC |
| **Group Policy Editor** | ✗ | ✅ | you want policy-level control |
| **BitLocker management** | device encryption only | ✅ full (`manage-bde`) | recovery key control, fixed drives |
| **Windows Sandbox** | ✗ | ✅ | opening unknown files |
| **RAM ceiling** | 128 GB | 2 TB | workstation-class memory |

Everything else people list — Defender, Windows Update, WSL2, sandboxed Store apps, the same 26H2 build — is **identical** on both editions.

## The differences in detail

### 1. Remote Desktop: client vs host

Home can *connect to* another PC. It cannot be **connected to**.

```powershell
# is this machine allowed to host RDP?
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server' -Name fDenyTSConnections -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions' -Name ProductType
```

If the Remote Desktop settings page is missing entirely, you are on Home. Workarounds (third-party remote tools) exist, but they are not RDP.

### 2. Hyper-V

Pro ships the Hyper-V role; Home does not. WSL2 uses the same virtualisation platform but is available on both — so "I need WSL2" is not a reason to buy Pro.

```powershell
Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V-All | Select-Object FeatureName,State
```

### 3. Domain and Entra join

A machine joined to an on-premises AD domain must be Pro (or Enterprise/Education). Entra ID join is also Pro+. Home can add a *work or school account* for app access, which is not the same thing as joining the device.

### 4. Group Policy

`gpedit.msc` is Pro+. Home has the same underlying registry policies in many cases, but no supported editor and no reliable way to apply computer-scope policy. MDM (Intune) also targets Pro+.

### 5. BitLocker: full vs device encryption

This one confuses people most:

| | Home | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic **device encryption** | ✅ (if hardware qualifies) | ✅ |
| **BitLocker** with `manage-bde` | ✗ | ✅ |
| Recovery key management UI | limited | full |
| Encrypt **fixed/secondary drives** | ✗ | ✅ |
| **TPM + PIN** at boot | ✗ | ✅ |

On Home, device encryption usually escrows the key to your Microsoft account and offers little control. On Pro you can export keys, require a PIN, and encrypt data drives.

```powershell
manage-bde -status          # Pro: full output. Home: not available.
Get-BitLockerVolume         # Pro only
```

### 6. Windows Sandbox

Sandbox is a Pro/Enterprise/Education feature. On Home there is no supported equivalent short of a full VM.

### 7. Memory and CPU ceilings

| | Home | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Max RAM | 128 GB | 2 TB |
| Max CPU sockets | 1 | 2 |
| Max cores | 64 | 128 |

For a desktop this is irrelevant. For a workstation with 256 GB of RAM it is a hard wall.

## What does **not** differ

- **Security updates** — same cadence, same lifecycle (26H2 Home and Pro both run to **2028-10-10**).
- **Defender, SmartScreen, Core isolation, Controlled folder access** — identical.
- **WSL2, winget, Terminal, PowerToys** — identical.
- **Performance** — identical. Pro is not faster.
- **Ads and suggestions** — identical; both can be turned down.

> **Tip: The honest test**
>
> Write down the specific thing you cannot do today. If it is "connect to this PC from my laptop", "run a VM", "join a domain", "use gpedit", or "control BitLocker keys" — buy Pro. If it is anything else, you are buying a label.

## How to check what you have

```powershell
Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object WindowsProductName,WindowsEditionId,OsBuildNumber
(Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem).OperatingSystemSKU
```

`WindowsEditionId` reads `Professional` or `Core` (Home). The SKU number distinguishes Home (101), Pro (48), and regional variants.

## Upgrading from Home to Pro

**Settings → System → Activation → Upgrade your edition of Windows → Change product key**, or buy the upgrade in the Store.

- The upgrade is **in-place**; files and apps stay.
- **Local accounts are converted to Microsoft account sign-in** in many upgrade flows — plan for it.
- Downgrading Pro → Home is **not** supported; it needs a clean install.
- A Home → Pro key from a grey-market site is usually a volume key that will deactivate. Buy retail or OEM with the machine.

## Lab boundary

E1. Edition capabilities are documented by Microsoft. The lab runs Windows 11 **Pro** 26H2 and LTSC 2024, so Home-only behaviour (device encryption UI, missing gpedit) is described from documentation, not reproduced.
